What are asphalt shingles?

Asphalt shingles are flat, overlapping roofing tiles made from a fibreglass or organic mat base, coated with asphalt, and embedded with mineral granules on the surface. The granules protect the shingle from UV rays and give the roof its colour and texture. Each shingle is typically 12 inches by 36 inches and is nailed in overlapping rows from the eaves up to the ridge.

There are three main types:

Asphalt shingles are one of the most cost-effective roofing options available. A full roof replacement on an average-sized home (1,500–2,000 sq ft) generally runs between $5,500 and $12,000. Luxury shingles can push costs higher, but they still undercut materials like slate or metal roofing significantly.
